Remembered through the ages as the seafaring weapon of choice, these swords have a history which stretches back to ancient times. Not only were they made famous in close quarter melees as pirates boarded treasure-laden galleons during the great "Age of Sail", they also have seen action as standard issue among many of the world's great navies. In 1917, the U.S. Navy decided to replace its Model 1860 cutlass which had been in continuous service for 57 years, with a new model. Cold Steel's¨ modern recreation of this classic fighting sword is as authentic as possible and virtually an exact copy of an original in the personal collection of Cold Steel¨ President Lynn C. Thompson. Just like the original, both feature a half basket guard stamped out of heavy 18-gauge carbon steel, blued to match the blade. The handles are fashioned from carefully shaped hardwood painted brown and secured to the full tang by three heavy brass cutler's rivets. The 1917 series swords are available with a 28" blade (Cutlass) or a 31" blade (Saber). Both feature blued blades to curtail rusting and short clipped points sharp enough for good penetration yet sturdy enough to resist bending or breaking. MSRP. $279.95 Excaliber special price only $199.95!

This saber was widely used by the British and their Prussian allies under General Blucher in the Battle of Waterloo. The blade was derived from the ferocious Indian Talwar and was reviled by the French who protested its use due to the horribly destructive wounds it inflicted. In fact, this saber was so successful as a cutting weapon, that the German Cavalry continued to use it right up to the beginning of the 20th century! It comes fully sharpened with a wood and leather scabbard with steel mounts. Blade 33" Overall 37.75" Weight 34.2 oz High Carbon Steel blade. MSRP. $374.95 Excaliber discount price only $199.95!

The term "broadsword," while it has become a generic term for the European sword in general, is not really an accurate term when used in that way. The only "true" usage of the word "broadsword" is when it applies specifically to the Scottish basket-hilt weapon of the 17th and 18th C., when that specific term was in usage to that specific weapon (what some people also call a "claymore") Early incarnations of the basket-hilt sword was in many respects more effective than later models. The basket of steel bars does an excellent job of protecting the hand, yet does not add a great amount of weight. Well balanced, this is an excellent cut and thrust weapon. Double edged blade, hand forged and beautifully polished with triple fullers. Stout basket hild is made of blued steel with black leather handle decoratively wrapped in copper wire. Blade 31.5" Overall 37.75" Weight 47.8oz Carbon Steel. Scabbard is Wood/leather with blued steel fittings. MSRP. $379.95

The Scottish Dirk that most knife enthusiasts are familiar with these days is more or less a piece of rubbish, a prop, a costume accessory for stage and screen. It has declined into a knife like object that people hang above their mantles or on the walls of dimly lit wood-paneled dens. Cold Steel manufactures a version that is a modern replica that harkens back to an earlier form when the dirk was a functioning tool and weapon. The 13 inch blade is forged to a hard spring temper from 1050 high carbon steel. It is 1 1/2 inches wide and comes fully sharpened and battle-ready, prepared to hew down any foe. The attractive Rosewood handle is capped with a contrasting blued-steel guard, bolster and disc-shaped pommel, and a handsome leather scabbard completes the package. The scabbard features an extra wide belt loop with a blued-steel throat and chape. This is the perfect companion piece to complete your Highland ensemble, a real fighting dirk instead of a useless piece of metal. MSRP. $149.99 Our price an incredable $117.99 !

The advantage of the sword point over the edge became increasingly evident by the end of the 16th century. The Rapier, with its long, elegantly thin profile which emphasized its point, became the popular choice in civilian self-defense. It was however a somewhat unwieldy weapon especially when it was used in narrow, crowded streets and alleyways. Eventually a more sophisticated, shorter and lighter version emerged that by the end of the 17th century had evolved into an entirely new weapon, the Small Sword. Civilians carried it for as long as swords remained an integral part of fashionable dress. Its primary advantage was its stiff, lightweight blade which was forged in a triangular cross section. It was a highly lethal weapon, ideal for thrusting, and hung conveniently from a sash, baldric, or belt. The hilt (compared to the Rapiers) was simple and smartly functional, consisting of no more than an elliptical plate, or two shells and a light knuckle guard. The Cold Steel Small Sword duplicates the original model in weight, balance, triangular cross section, and deadly sharp point, but uses modern materials like 1050 high carbon blade steel, heat treated to a tough spring temper. The hilt features two shells with functional finger loops and a light, but strong, knuckle guard. Perfectly balanced and weighing only 22 ounces, the Small Sword comes complete with an attractive leather scabbard that features an intricately decorated throat and chape. MSRP. $399.95
